Kola nut is consumed by breaking it open and into pieces, then chewing the kola nut pieces as you chew gum. Most people find the taste very bitter, especially at first. Kola nut is a dessert given as a gift to visitors entering a home, usually with some formal ceremony. Offering the kola nut is a gesture of friendship and hospitality.
Cold snacks are represented in Rwandan cuisine by simple fruits like grapes, mangoes, bananas, papaya and avocado. As with appetizers, fruits are mostly considered snacks, either fresh or dried.
